Hallmarking

At Luna’s Locket, every piece of jewellery is crafted with care and inspired by the natural world. In line with UK hallmarking law, all of my solid silver pieces weighing over 7.78 grams are hallmarked by the Edinburgh Assay Office, guaranteeing their authenticity and precious metal purity.

This hallmark is your assurance that each creation not only carries the spirit of nature, but also meets the highest standards of quality and craftsmanship. Although some Luna's Locket pieces fall below the weight limit, rest assured that they are still created using the same 100% recycled sterling silver as the hallmarked pieces.

What Is A Hallmark?

A hallmark is a series of marks applied to an item of precious metal by an independent, government-appointed Assay Office. There are currently four Assay Offices in the United Kingdom: Edinburgh, London, Sheffield and Birmingham.

Hallmarks indicate the purity of metal in a product. The marks are traditionally applied by striking with a punch but this can now also be done with a laser for finer pieces. Hallmarks can only be applied to an item after it has been tested through a process known as ‘assaying’, where the precious metal content is verified.

I have chosed to have 'LL' as my hallmark - to represent Luna's Locket, nestled within two crescent moons back to back.

Edinburgh Assay Office

The Edinburgh Assay Office has a rich history that stretches back over five centuries, making it one of the oldest assay offices in the world. Originally, Scottish gold and silver were marked with a castle emblem, symbolising Edinburgh Castle - a mark that is still used today as the city’s official assay mark.

The Edinburgh Assay Office continues this long tradition, combining historical craftsmanship with modern technology to ensure that every hallmarked item meets strict UK and international standards. It remains a trusted authority in the jewellery world and a proud guardian of Scotland’s hallmarking heritage.
